Beware of Scammers Targeting NC Real Estate Brokers

In today's digital age, it's crucial to stay vigilant against online scams and fraudulent communications. Recently, the North Carolina Real Estate Commission (NCREC) issued a bulletin warning brokers about a new scam targeting license renewals.

At Skyline School, your trusted NC real estate education provider, we want to ensure that our students and fellow brokers are fully aware of these deceptive practices and know how to protect themselves.

The Scam Alert: What You Need to Know

Scammers are sending text messages to brokers claiming that they haven't renewed their licenses. These messages often include links that appear legitimate but are designed to steal your personal information. It's important to remember:

  • The NCREC does not communicate with brokers via text messages.

  • Do not click on any links in suspicious texts.

The Only Safe Place to Renew Your License

To renew your broker license safely and securely, always go directly to the official NCREC website at www.NCREC.gov. This is the only authorized platform for license renewals and ensures that your personal and professional information remains protected.

Verify Your License Status

To check the status of your license renewal, you can log in to your NCREC Licensee Account at www.NCREC.gov. It's a good practice to regularly verify your license status to avoid any surprises. Additionally, your Broker-In-Charge (BIC) can also check this information on your behalf.

Steps to Check Your License Status:

  1. Visit the NCREC website: Go to www.NCREC.gov.

  2. Log in to your account: Use your credentials to access your Licensee Account. If you have not changed your password, it is the last 4 digits of your social security number.

  3. Review your status: Check the current status of your license renewal.

Protect Yourself and Your Career

Staying informed and cautious is key to protecting yourself from scams. Here are a few additional tips:

  • Never share your personal information via text or email unless you are certain of the recipient's identity.

  • Report suspicious messages to the NCREC to help them track and address scam attempts.

  • Educate your peers: Share this information with your fellow brokers to ensure they are aware of the potential threat.

At Skyline School, we are committed to providing our students with the latest updates and essential information to help you succeed in your real estate career. Stay safe, stay informed, and always rely on official sources for your professional needs.
